Tour/Cruise priced from $3,799 to $4,448 (plus airfare).

Burt Wolf, the host of the public television series Travels & Traditions, invites you to join him on this Avalon Waterways' Tour and River Cruise. Burt will be your onboard host throughout the trip. This is a unique opportunity to travel with Burt, see the sights, and experience the places where his television shows were filmed.

OVERVIEW OF THE CRUISE

Prior to the cruise departure, Burt will mail each guest a packet of his research and background material about the tour locations and a DVD of one of his programs that relates to the cruise. These materials are his personal evaluation of the area – the history, art, architecture, what to eat, what to buy and what to see. It will give you detailed background information on the places we are going to visit. It will also give you some ideas for things you might like to do in your free time. Unlike ocean cruising, our river cruise often docks right in the city center. You can tour close to the ship or venture further into town. The ship’s entire interior is non-smoking and all announcements are in English.

With Burt as your host, the cruise will begin in Prague, Czech Republic and travel through Germany, Austria, Slovakia, ending in Budapest, Hungary. The cruise itinerary includes stops in Nuremberg, Regensburg, Passau, Linz, Melk, and Vienna. Avalon Tapestry’s English-speaking Captain, Cruise Director and crew are experienced professionals dedicated to your comfort.

SPECIAL BURT WOLF EVENTS AND RESEARCH MATERIALS

In addition to being your host throughout the entire cruise, Burt will conduct the following special events:

  1. A Tasting of the Wines, Beers or Spirits of the Region.
  2. A Tasting of the Special Foods of the Region.
  3. An Introduction to The History of European Architecture.
  4. An Introduction to The History of Chocolate.
  5. An Introduction to The History of Wine In America.
  6. A Talk about how Burt’s Public Television Programs are Produced.

CRUISE ITINERARY

DAY 1 – SATURDAY, 19TH JUNE 2010 * DEPART U.S. FOR PRAGUE, CZECH REPUBLIC

Overnight flight from the United States to Prague, Czech Republic.

DAY 2 - SUNDAY, 20TH JUNE 2010 * ARRIVE PRAGUE, CZECH REPUBLIC

If you have booked your air travel with Avalon, or made special arrangements, an Avalon representative will be at the Prague airport to assist you with your transfer to the host hotel. An Avalon cruise director will be waiting at a desk in the hotel lobby. The afternoon is free so you can unpack, relax and begin exploring the city. On a number of occasions, Burt has filmed in Prague and he will supply you with an updated tip sheet with information on where to eat, what to eat and drink and where to shop. At about 6pm, everyone will meet for a drink with Burt and the cruise director for a briefing on the itinerary.

DAY 3 - MONDAY 21ST JUNE 2010 * PRAGUE, CZECH REPUBLIC

There is a guided tour of Prague’s best-known treasures - the Old Town’s Astronomical Clock; Prague Castle, which is the largest ancient castle in the world with its St. Vitus Cathedral; and the Charles Bridge. You will also have the option of joining Burt for a tour of the Lobkowitz Collection – an amazing assembly of important paintings, original Mozart manuscripts, musical instruments and weapons. The afternoon is free for walking along the banks of the river, exploring more of the Old Town and shopping. There is also the option of joining Burt for dinner in one of his favorite restaurants.

DAY 4 – TUESDAY 22ND JUNE 2010 * PRAGUE, CZECH REPUBLIC

This is a free day; however, Burt will supply you with a detailed list of places of specific interest. There are also two optional tours. The first is to Kutná Hora, a well-preserved 13th Century mining town with a fantastically bizarre church decorated with human bones. The second tour is to Terezín, which was the site of a Nazi concentration camp.

DAY 5 – WEDNESDAY, 23RD JUNE 2010 * PRAGUE, CZECH REPUBLIC – NUREMBERG, GERMANY (EMBARKATION)

During the morning, there is an optional Jewish Heritage Tour. With only 1,500 or so Orthodox Jews living in what remains of the traditional Jewish Quarter, it has once again become a thriving and fascinating part of Prague. A local expert will take you on a tour to the Jewish Museum, the Jewish Cemetery and the Synagogues
– an insider’s view of Jewish Life in the past and today. There is also an optional tour called “Prague Secrets Revealed” – an insider’s view of the city. After lunch you’ll travel by coach through the Bohemian Forest, arriving in Nuremberg where the crew of your ship will welcome you onboard.

DAY 6 - THURSDAY, 24TH JUNE 2010 * NUREMBERG, GERMANY

In the morning, you’ll have a guided tour of Nuremberg, visit the castles that tower over the city and the churches that are located inside the city walls. Burt will guide you through the picturesque Hauptmarkt – famous for its gingerbread products. He’ll also treat you to a sample of his favorite Nuremberg cookies. The city is still associated with its handmade toys and the first pocket watches called “Nuremberg Eggs” that were made here in the sixteenth century.

DAY 7 - FRIDAY, 25TH JUNE 2010 * REGENSBURG, GERMANY

Regensburg is one of Germany’s best-preserved medieval cities. You will have a guided tour of the city’s architectural highlights including the Old Town Hall, the white and gold Old Chapel and the Porta Pretoria, gates to an ancient Roman fort built in 179 A.D. There is an optional tour through the Danube Gorge to the Weltenburg Abbey, which is located on a peninsula directly beneath the cliffs of the Danube Gorge. It was founded by Irish and/or Scottish monks in 620 and is one of the oldest abbeys in Bavaria. The present Benedictine structure dates back to the 18th century when it was extensively rebuilt in the baroque style. As Burt is quick to point out, the monks of Weltenburg Abbey have been brewing beer since 1050, which makes it the oldest abbey brewery in the world – you owe yourself a glass.

DAY 8 - SATURDAY, 26TH JUNE 2010 * PASSAU, GERMANY - LINZ, AUSTRIA

Located at the confluence of the Ilz and Danube Rivers, Passau is a city of arcades and cobblestone streets. Its Cathedral of St. Stephen’s houses the world's largest church organ with over 17,000 pipes. There is also an optional excursion to the Austrian city of Salzburg. It’s the birthplace of Mozart and the setting for “The Sound of Music” movie. It is also a charming small town with busy streets, lined with interesting shops and coffee houses with magnificent pastries.

DAY 9 – SUNDAY, 27TH JUNE 2010 * MELK - VIENNA, AUSTRIA

Today there is a guided tour of Melk's Benedictine Abbey -- one of the most magnificent structures in Europe and one of Europe’s largest monasteries. The afternoon is spent sailing to Vienna, the capital of Austria – the city that inspired Mozart, Beethoven, Strauss and some of the world’s finest pastry chefs. During the evening, there is an optional concert in one of Vienna’s classic music halls.

DAY 10 – MONDAY, 28TH JUNE 2010 * VIENNA, AUSTRIA

For hundreds of years Vienna was the center of the Habsburg Empire. It is filled with magnificent art, architecture, music and excellent shopping. It is also the world’s epicenter for great coffee. Burt will give you a copy of his guide to coffee in Vienna and recommend a few of the best cafes.

There is a morning tour of the city, and Burt will offer you the option to join him for lunch at Plachutta, one of Vienna’s best restaurants. There’s an optional excursion to the Schönbrunn Palace, the ancestral home of the Habsburgs and a visit to a classic coffee house. Burt will also arrange for a tasting of Sachertorte, a pastry made famous by the Sacher Hotel --- a chocolate cake filled with layers of apricot jam.

DAY 11 – TUESDAY, 29TH JUNE 2010 * BUDAPEST, HUNGARY

Budapest is a peaceful, beautiful and culturally interesting city, which has managed to hold onto much of its history while adapting to the needs of a modern capital. You’ll tour the city and end up in the Castle Hill area, which holds an entire city district filled with historic houses. Castle Hill is also home to the Mathias Church, which was originally constructed in 1255. There is an optional Jewish Heritage Tour that takes you through the most populous and active Jewish community in Central Europe. Our local expert will explain the history and take you to visit the largest synagogue in Europe and the Jewish Museum.

DAY 12 – WEDNESDAY, 30TH JUNE 2010 * BUDAPEST, HUNGARY (DISEMBARKATION)

Homebound flights should not leave Budapest airport before 10:00 am. Your flight will arrive back in the United States the same day (Wednesday 30 June).

A NOTE FROM BURT ABOUT OPTIONAL EXCURSIONS & THE CRUISE ITINERARY

The basic trip contains all the elements that I consider essential. However, having taken the cruise before, I realized that there were a number of excursions that might prove interesting to some (but not all) of our passengers. I was reluctant to add the cost of these excursions to the general trip, but felt they should be offered to fellow passengers who might find the subjects inviting. The additional cost for each excursion is $25 per person. You can sign-up for these optional excursions while you are onboard and pay at the end of the cruise.
I will be onboard to answer any additional questions.

Please note: Avalon Waterways makes their best effort to keep to the itinerary as noted, however, factors may arise during the tour that compel Avalon to adjust the schedule.

EXCELLENT FOOD

One of the most popular aspects of a Burt Wolf River Cruise is the excellence of the food. Each full day onboard, there is a full breakfast, lunch and dinner. There is a cocktail reception, welcome dinner, and Captain’s dinner --- one sitting with open seating arrangements (non-assigned). At dinner, each evening, there is a selection of a red wine and a white wine from Europe’s most famous wine regions. The wines are served throughout the meal without charge as well as soft drinks and beer.

Early Riser Coffee: 6:00am, Self-service coffee, hot water, tea bags, croissants, cookies or other finger foods.

Breakfast: 7:00am – 8:30am, A buffet table includes a wide variety of breads, cereals, fruit and fruit salad, cold cuts, smoked salmon, cheeses, pastries, yogurts and juices. Scrambled eggs, sausages, bacon, and other hot items can vary from day to day. The chef will prepare fresh omelets and other egg dishes to order.

Lunch: Usually served at 12:30pm depending on the cruise schedule, Buffet-style with appetizers, soups, sandwiches, cold cuts, breads, salad bar, two main courses (one of which may be a carving station), dessert table, cheese board and fresh fruit.

Afternoon Tea: Coffee, tea and cake will be served either in the lounge or on the Sun or Sky Deck.

Dinner: Usually served at 7:30pm depending on cruise schedule. Dinner is traditionally four courses including a vegetarian selection. Choice of entrees with every dinner including complimentary red and wine wines from the region. Soft drinks and beer are also included free of charge at each dinner.

On Days 3 through 5, buffet breakfast will be offered at your Prague Hotel.
